1. Turn off * AntiVirus software before starting
This is probably the most important thing to remember and the one thing that can cause the most amount of trouble during an upgrade or installation
2. Download Service Pack updates overnight as they are large files.
3. When moving SolidWorks from one computer to another remember to go to Help->Transfer Activation...

I recommend using the manual download instead of the Download Manager. Click on the link for "If you are having trouble click here." It has helped with some download problems.
